United face competition for Sneijder

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly locked in a battle with Manchester City to sign Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Speculation at the weekend suggests that Sneijder has flown to California to meet his model wife Yolanthe and make a decision on where his future lies.
Manchester United boss Ferguson and his opposite number at City, Roberto Mancini, are understood to be eager to add the Dutch star to their squads ahead of a bid for Champions League glory next season.
Sneijder's agent, Soren Lerby, reportedly met Ferguson in the club's team hotel prior to their match at West Ham in April but neither United nor City have officially opened discussions with the player's club.
One possible stumbling block could be the midfielder's wages with Sneijder said to be after more than £200,000 a week to quit the San Siro for a move to the Premier League.
But United showed last season they are prepared to pay extra for players with Wayne Rooney signing a contract worth £250,000 a week, while
Ferguson is keen to freshen up his squad during the close season.

French Giants to Offer £12m For United Striker

French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain will be the first club to tempt Manchester United with an offer for Dimitar Berbatov during the transfer window with a £12 million opening bid for the Manchester United number-9, according to reports.
Berbatov’s future at Old Trafford is currently on the line following Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to leave him out of the UEFA Champions League final clash against Barcelona last weekend and then hand Michael Owen a new one-year deal.
Manchester United are believed to be willing to listen to offers of between £10 million to £15 million for their Bulgarian striker, who cost them a massive £30.75 million from Tottenham Hotspur three years back.
Despite being left out of the UEFA Champions League final squad, Berbatov has stated that he wants to stay at the club and fight for Manchester United’s 20th title.
I will stay, I will fight for the 20th title.
If I were an easy quitter, I would never have made it this far. Everything at Manchester United starts from scratch for me on July 4.
There will be new finals and we will be fighting for new titles. I am moving ahead. When you go through difficult times, you should not quit.
The truth is that I stayed at the dressing room and watched the Champions League final there, on a TV screen.
I was really disappointed. I was ashamed that I was not part of the team and did not want people to see how sad I feel.
The 30-year-old was the Barclays Premier League’s joint top scorer last season alongside Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez with 20 goals.

Month In Review: Manchester United 2011

The saying, "April Showers brings May's Flowers," was quite fitting seeing as though Manchester United were able to finally bare the fruits of the long, enduring season.
There will be mixed feelings on how sweet the the fruits of the 2010/11 season taste, the Reds did no harm by winning the most coveted piece of silverware and finished runners-up in Europe.
United needed to weather a couple of storms to land the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League trophy, but they did it with class and sheer determination, but, unfortunately, the ship sailed on their fourth UEFA Champions League trophy.
Record wise, May was not a very good month, with the Reds only winning half of their six matches, but, domestically, they managed to get results at the right time to seal the most coveted prize of all. Their capture of this year's trophy moved them to the top of the perch - uprooting their long-time, bitter rival, Liverpool.
Over the course of the month, the Reds scored 12 goals with none other than Anderson leading the charge with three goals to his name. The Brazilian midfield has never been known for his statistical presence in the squad, but he also chipped in with two assists, which was also tied for the team lead.
Even though the Anderson led the Reds in the two main offensive statistical categories, he was still outshone by one of his teammates for Player of the Month.

Star

Wayne Rooney only scored two goals this month, but his burning desire to contribute to the club's success was evident throughout the month. It was his calmness and confidence to take the all-important that would ultimately seal the destination of the Premier League. Rooney also scored a timely goal in the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final, which gave the Reds a tiniest bit of hope to overcome Barcelona, but it was his never-say-die attitude throughout that has earned him the plaudits.
One of the most disappointing aspects of the month was United's inability to keep a clean sheet, which was the only time this has happened during the 2010/11 season. What makes it even more baffling, the Reds headed into the month on the heels of three straight shutouts, which totaled 308 minutes. However that streak ended 56 minutes later when United lost their opening match of May.

Summary

In the final edition of the North-South Derby of the season, Manchester United fell to Arsenal 1-0 to fling the door on Barclays Premier League race wide-open. Aaron Ramsey, who was thought to have secured a deal to Old Trafford before he signed for Arsenal, scored the decisive goal at the Emirates Stadium to give the Gunners all three precious points.
United triumphed 4-1 over Schalke 04 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Semifinal tie to secure a place in the final for the third time in four years. Antonio Valencia and Darron Gibson scored goals five minutes apart, but a goal from Jurado gave the visitors hope, however, two goals from Anderson in the second half saw the Reds run away 6-1 on aggregate.
With the entire football world glued to Old Trafford, United secured a fully-deserved 2-1 win over Chelsea to take an enormous step towards the Premier League title. Javier Hernandez scored just 36 seconds into the match, and Nemanja Vidic scored midway through the first half to give the Reds a commanding two-goal lead going into halftime, however, Frank Lampard cut their lead in half to set up a nervy ending, but the Reds held on for the win.
In the penultimate Premier League match of the season, Manchester United earned a 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park to clinch this year's trophy. Completely against the run of play, Brett Emerton hammered Rovers in front in the first half, but a correct decision awarded the Reds a penalty 17 minutes from time, which was smashed home with conviction by Rooney that gave them a share of the spoils.
In the final match of the 2010/11 Premier League season, United, quite fittingly, staged another come-from-behind victory as they beat Blackpool 4-2 at Old Trafford. Ji-Sung Park gave the Reds the lead, but two highly controversial goals converted by Charlie Adam and Gary Taylor Fletcher gave the Seasiders the unlikeliest of advantages, however, Anderson, who scored his first Premier League goal of the season, an unfortunate own goal by Ian Evatt and late finish by Michael Owen settled the scoreline.
In one of the most highly-anticipated European finals in years, Manchester United suffered a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona, who claimed the 2011 UEFA Champions League trophy, at Wembley Stadium. Pedro Rodriguez put Barcelona the lead on 27 minutes into the match, but Rooney drew United level just seven minutes after, however, two second half goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa gave the Spaniards the fully deserved victory.
Ultimately though, Manchester United are champions of England for a record 19th time, and that title is the one thing that we should remember above anything else that happened in the month of May.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has announced his retirement from football with immediate effect.

There had been speculation about Scholes' future in the past few weeks and it had looked increasingly likely the 36-year-old would end his stellar career at the end of the campaign.
And Scholes confirmed that view on Tuesday morning.
He said: "This was not a decision I have taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing." It was hardly a surprise that Scholes, who will join the coaching staff at Old Trafford from next season, should choose a low-key way to confirm his future intentions and the former England star even joked about it in his announcement.

tremendous support
"I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do," he said.
"To have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour.
"To have been part of the team that helped the club reach a record 19th title is a great privilege.
"I would like to thank the fans for their tremendous support throughout my career, I would also like to thank all the coaches and players that I have worked with over the years.
"But most of all I would like to thank Sir Alex (Ferguson) for being such a great manager.
"From the day I joined the club his door has always been open and I know this team will go on to win many more trophies under his leadership."
Scholes' role within the United coaching set-up has still to be outlined, although there could be an opening available with the reserves, where Warren Joyce has been acting alone since the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Scholes will also be granted a testimonial, that will take place in August.
"What more can I say about Paul Scholes that I haven't said before," said Sir Alex Ferguson.
"We are going to miss a truly unbelievable player.
"Paul has always been fully committed to this club and I am delighted he will be joining the coaching staff from next season.
"Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new r

Van der Sar plans year-long break

The veteran Dutchman was unable to provide a fitting climax to his stellar career at Wembley as Manchester United lost 3-1 to Barcelona in the Champions League.
It left him with an overall tally of two wins and three defeats from his five finals and marked the end of two decades at the top of the game.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper has started taking his coaching badges. And he has enrolled on a course in Holland, so he does have the option of completing them both in his adopted home and his real one. Given his experience, Van der Sar is bound to be a man in demand.
However, his immediate reaction as he headed towards the rest of his life was to take a break.
"I have done some coaching badges in England and have put myself forward to do that in Holland as well but I am not sure if I am going to finish them," he said.
"Maybe it is too soon. I want to take a year out and do some nice things.
"I want to watch some games with friends in a normal situation on a Saturday, have a nice meal on a Saturday night, watch a game on Sunday, play golf and have some family time."

right time
All those things must look so appealing to someone who has spent so long coping with the discipline required to operate at such a high level.
In addition, his wife Annemarie's continuing recovery from a stroke has to be taken into account.
However, how long it will be before Van der Sar starts to get itchy feet for an involvement in the game he knows so well remains to be seen.
"It is not going to be easy," he said. "I never said that.
"I have some friends who retired five or six years ago, so I have exceeded my expectations by two or three seasons anyway. It is not a big problem."
Van der Sar was remarkably emotionless about his retirement, and the fact his final game ended in a defeat.
"I am quite all right," he said.
"It is not too bad. I expected more emotions, or different ones.
"It is the right time for me and I am happy with my decision."

Rooney expects Chelsea challenge

Although United's campaign did end on a low note with their chastening Champions League defeat by Barcelona at Wembley on Saturday, they have been able to celebrate a record 19th championship.
Sir Alex Ferguson will have to rebuild though. A summer of change was expected even before Paul Scholes announced his retirement earlier on Tuesday.
Edwin van der Sar has hung up his gloves, Owen Hargreaves has been released, while there are major question marks over the futures of Wes Brown, Michael Owen and record signing Dimitar Berbatov.
more cash
However, there are question marks over all United's major rivals too.
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini would appear to have the happiest problem, attempting to prise more cash out of Blues owner Sheikh Mansour.
More new faces are anticipated at Eastlands and given they finished last season level on points with Chelsea, and only missed securing the runners-up spot on goal difference, it would appear City are the most likely title challengers.
Yet Rooney is predicting Chelsea will once again be the team to beat.
"Chelsea will be our main rivals for the league next season," Rooney said. "They are so strong and powerful and ended the season so well."
Rooney does accept it will be tougher than ever next term, which he believes is bound to follow this season's trend of sides at the bottom regularly beating those at the top.
"Chelsea, Manchester City, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal will all be fighting for top four," he said.
"It makes it even more intense. It wouldn't surprise you if any of those teams finished in the top two. The teams in the lower half have improved. Going away from home was so difficult this season."
